ARTIST STATEMENT
Her work reflects her deeply personal relationship with control, a theme rooted in her observations of life’s unpredictable nature. This exploration began while witnessing her late father’s frustrations with the loss of control over his penmanship due to Parkinson’s disease, juxtaposed with her then young daughter’s blissful lack of awareness of control while coloring all over the page. Over time, this theme expanded to encompass Walker’s own struggles with mental health and the broader realization of how little control we truly have.
Her work is about her relationship with control. The poke designs are deliberate and precise, created one mark at a time. They give her a sense of certainty, especially in moments when everything else feels chaotic. In contrast, the droopy flowers embrace spontaneity. Their colors and forms evolve unpredictably, bleeding and blooming on their own. These two processes mirror her personal struggle between needing control and learning to let go, reminding her that both have a place in creating something beautiful.
